Lessons From the Sinful Woman

Lessons From the Sinful Woman
“And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.” Luke 7:37-38

Like us, this woman was broken. She knew she needed the Lord, she set her fears behind her and went right in that room, bold, yet humble, and proceeded to wash our Lord’s feet with her tears and hair before she anointed them with the ointment she brought.
The Bible doesn’t give us a lot of information about the sinful woman, other than she was a sinner, and her sins were many, one can only speculate from there. But, what it does tell us about her is her love for Jesus. Her short story is a very powerful one.

She went to Jesus
When she knew Jesus went to dine at the Pharisee's house, she gathered the best she had and went to Him. We don't have to wait for Jesus to come to our town, He is with us all the time, we are free to go to Him anytime we want or need to.
She brought an alabaster box of ointment
She brought the best she had. What is my best? The Bible says my best is as filthy rags. “…all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags” Isaiah 64:6
She stood at His feet, behind Him, weeping
Standing at His feet showed she was submissive and humble. She stood behind Him, not beside Him or in front of Him, putting Jesus first, before herself. Her heart was broken because of her sins, she repented of her sins.
She washed His feet with her tears, and wiped them with her hair, she kissed His feet and anointed them with the ointment she brought with her.
She served Jesus by humbling herself to wash His feet with her tears of love for Him and then wiped them clean with her own hair, submitting to Him and placing Him above everything in her life, including herself. She humbled herself more by kissing His feet and then, giving the very best she had, she anointed His feet with the ointment she brought with her. She showed great honor and glory to the Lord and put Him first in her life.

She knew she needed the Lord, she went to Him, prepared, bringing her very best, repenting of her sins, humble and submissive, putting Jesus above herself, giving Him honor and glory. She showed her love for the Lord by cleansing His feet and anointing them.
While we can’t literally wash our Lord’s feet, we can come to Him submissive and humble, repenting of our sins, bringing Him our very best, our love for Him, putting Him above ourselves and everything in our life, every time.

Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little. And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven. And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also? And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.”

  1. Humbling ourselves isn't always our first response to our own sin. Justification might be. But when we come to ourselves, may we each be as wise as the sinful woman. We've all been her, in some way or another. Thanks for this wisdom, Jenn!

  2. Humility isn't something we do naturally, but better to learn to humble ourselves and allow God to lift us than to lift ourselves and make it necessary for God to humble us. thanks for spotlighting this story!

  4. This journey is difficult. Submission for me is not easy or natural but it is the only was to Jesus for forgiveness. When we do it is such a beautiful thing.

I love these stories in the Bible of women who show up even if it meant going in front of someone. Knowing the desperation of their sins they were willing to go to great lengths to seek forgiveness. The sign of a truly repentant heart. Great post! Thanks so much for sharing with us at Sitting Among Friends. Have a great week.
