How to Strive to Have a Godly Marriage - Pride, what does it do?

Pride, What Does it Do?
Pride ruins marriages and causes divorces.
II Samuel 22:28 - And the afflicted people thou wilt save: but thine eyes are upon the haughty, that thou mayest bring them down.
Proverbs 6:17 - A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood
Proverbs 8:12 - I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.
Proverbs 15:25 - The Lord will destroy the house of the proud: but he will establish the border of the widow.
Proverbs 16:5 - Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.

The opposite of pride is humility -
Proverbs 16:18-19 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.
It is better to have little and have a humble heart, spirit and attitude, then to have the wealth of the world and a prideful heart, spirit and attitude.
James 4:6 - But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
I Peter 5:5-6 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
Humility is a characteristic of Christ.
We should all strive to stay humble; When we're humble, we grow in the Lord.
What Does Pride Do?
Hides/disguises itself most of the time the ones who are being prideful don't know that they are behaving that way or that they have that attitude
It makes us unteachable, " I know a better way; I know all about it".
It often produces anger and has a lot " I, I, I"
It makes us lustful, " I want, I need"
It is certainly unapologetic, " I have nothing to be sorry for, I am right"
Proverbs 12:10 - A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.
Proverbs 28:25 - He that is of a proud heart stirreth up strife: but he that putteth his trust in the Lord shall be made fat.
It causes contention/arguing
Five Different Types of Pride
Intellectual, I am smarter then you, I know more then you
Material Items, more, more, more; mine is bigger and better then yours; I got mine cheaper; or mine costs such and such
Spiritual, I know more then you; I am closer to God then you {when your prideful, God can't use you}
Social, raciest, social status, or job position
Talent, whatever you talent is, you believe no one can do it as good as you can
II Samuel 22:28 - And the afflicted people thou wilt save: but thine eyes are upon the haughty, that thou mayest bring them down.
Pride will keep you from getting help where or when you need it and makes you untouchable. God gives grace to those who are humble, and destroys pride.
Are you having trouble getting past a strong-hold or ridding a sin from your life?
That's pride! It is your flesh, your prideful man, telling God you don't need His help with it and that you don't need Him, when, in reality, He is ALL you need! Let go, and let God!
There is no way you can deal with your sins until you humble yourself. We should be dyeing to sin, and ourselves every single day; maybe even several times a day. Pride IS sin.
A lot of our failures are due to pride. Pride will stop the process of building your marriage, and of building your family. If you see pride in your spouse, you need to lovingly confront them and put a stop to it right then, as with your children.
We are nothing, God is everything
Pride:
Destroys you
Destroys marriages
Destroys families
Destroys churches

Gods Way to Deal With Your Wrong Emotions
Deuteronomy 4:9 - Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons;
Deuteronomy 6:16 - Ye shall not tempt the Lord your God, as ye tempted him in Massah.
Obey God with your soul
Examples of Biblical emotions -
Genesis 42:21 - and they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.
Numbers 11:6 - But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes. Numbers 21:4 - And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.
Deuteronomy 12:15 - Notwithstanding thou mayest kill and eat flesh in all thy gates, whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, according to the blessing of the LORD thy God which he hath given thee: the unclean and the clean may eat thereof, as of the roebuck, and as of the hart. Judges 10:16 - And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the LORD: and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel. Judges 16:16 - And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed unto death;
Job 3:20 - Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul; II Samuel 13:39 - And the soul of king David longed to go forth unto Absalom: for he was comforted concerning Amnon, seeing he was dead. Job 14:22 - But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.
Psalm 35:9 - And my soul shall be joyful in the LORD: it shall rejoice in his salvation. Psalm 35:13 - But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth: I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer returned into mine own bosom. Psalm 141:8 - But mine eyes are unto thee, O GOD the Lord: in thee is my trust; leave not my soul destitute.
Isaiah 42:1 - Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. Isaiah 53:11 - He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. Jeremiah 31:25 - For I have satiated the weary soul, and I have replenished every sorrowful soul.
John 20:27 - Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. Acts 2:43 - And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. Genesis 34:3 - And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.
You must not ever follow your emotions; if you follow your emotions you will be deceived; if you let your emotions control your life your life will be like a roller coaster.
Exciting climb to the top where you will find temporary peace only to be disappointed when you plummet down into despair, before being jerked around by a temporary hope just to be let down again.
Psalm 42:5 - Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.
Psalm 53:5 - There were they in great fear, where no fear was: for God hath scattered the bones of him that encampeth against thee: thou hast put them to shame, because God hath despised them.
Emotions will deceive you.
If you don't resolve some of your emotions (anger, depression) they will keep coming back over and over, and more intense each time. However, you can reject your emotions! Ask God why you are feeling the way you do, if there is any BIBLICAL reason for what you are feeling, if there isn't one, reject it in the name of Jesus!
Let God lead you through your mind and your will. Make your mind captive to Christ and let your will follow, and put your emotions behind your will.
Job Chapter 2
Take every thought captive
Refuse to let your thoughts be carried away by Satan's lies; give each thought to Christ, take every thought captive.

Philippians 4:8 - Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
II Corinthians 10:4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
Let God teach you to let your mind and will conquer your emotions.
Obey, obey, obey
When you do what you feel like God wants you to do, and you begin having second thoughts, those thoughts aren't from God - REJECT THEM, reject the emotion
Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Mind and will over emotions
Let the Holy Spirit rule your life
Look at it like this, when you let your emotions take over, your mind isn't even working, think about it, like, when you get angry or upset, you work on emotion and feeling, sometimes not even remembering what you said or did ..
Going or doing it God's way is ignoring your emotions, or putting them on the back burner; look past the emotion and look to God, then ask God how to deal with the emotion or why you even have it.
Numbers chapters 13 and 14
Anytime your emotions take over your mind, your going to be in trouble
Psalm 23:1-3 - (A Psalm of David.) The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Psalm 19:7 - The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
Put your mind under Christ, don't let your will be controlling of emotions, and forget your feelings

  2. Great post! I love how at every turn you point back to scripture. Putting our emotions and feelings aside is definitely not easy, but necessary especially in marriage.
