The Excellent Wife - A Wife's Understanding of Sin

Four Characteristics of Sin

It's universal - Romans 3:23
It's open and obvious to others - Galatians 5:19-21
It cannot be hidden from God - I Samuel 16
It is justly penalized by God - Romans 6:23

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. - Isaiah 53:5

Our punishment for OUR sins fell upon Christ, we have been justified by God through Christ; we have been declared righteous by God based on the works of Christ.

 If you’re a Christian you have been forgiven and declared righteous before God.

Repentance and sinful habits involve more then just confessing to God; for the purpose of godliness, you have to remove the sins from your life and replace it with something good, it takes time and a lot of work, we are dead to sin, therefore we shouldn't sin anymore.

The put-off - put-on dynamic -

  1. How do you become aware of sin? By reading God's Word, and conviction of the Holy Spirit

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

Hebrews 4:12, John 16:7-8

  1. Do we have to sin? No, sin is a choice.

Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

Romans 6:6,7,14

  1. What was the 'old man' like? The 'old man' is sinful, enjoying the lusts and sin of this world.

That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

Ephesians 4:22

  1. What is the 'new man' like? A new creation in Christ; clean

And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Ephesians 4:24

  1. We are to put off corrupt, deceitful lusts, and put on the righteousness and holiness of God

Ephesians 4:22,24

  1. We are also to put away lying and corrupt ways

Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

Colossians 3:9

  1. We are to put on the new man renewed in the knowledge of Christ

And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

Colossians 3:10
