How to Break Family Curses

Proverbs 20:7 - The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him. “the just man” is a righteousness man in the right standing with God and others “walketh in his integrity” he’s not perfect, but, his life is complete and he is striving to be who God calls him to be. We aren’t perfect, but, Christians, when we sin, we can repent of our sins to God and be forgiven. “his children are blessed after him” this isn’t only referring to his children, but his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. God looks at me, you, past and future generations and sees them all at the same time. I Samuel 9:1-2 - Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of power. And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people There are six generations listed above, to describe one person; this is how God sees us. So, you are either a linage of cursing’s or a linage of blessings, or a combination of the two. You can sit back and watch your children and see the linage of cursing’s and blessings.
Exodus 34:7 - Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.
The third and fourth generation – there will be some who lean to the righteous side and some to the unrighteous side.
Exodus 20:5-6 - Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments
Again, there God is talking about the iniquity of the fathers on their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. But, notice also, it’s not all bad, He also talks about showing mercy to thousands who love Him and keep His commandments, it goes both ways!
As a Christian, we should strive to live as Christ, to serve others. What kind of impact does your life have on your children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren? You want to pass down blessings, not cursing’s, we have got to start impacting our generations righteously.
You can’t afford the price of sin. It destroys you and the generations following you – think about this, the very sins you live in and live with, will affect and be passed down to your children, grandchildren and your great-grandchildren. Do you want your grandbabies and great-grandbabies living in and struggling with the same sins you do, as well as their children, and so forth? Every day we all should ask ourselves, what impact will the decisions I make today have on my future generations? What we pass on is very powerful, how else could it go on for generations if it weren’t, weather it is a curse or a blessing.
Jeremiah 32:17-18 - Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee: Thou shewest lovingkindness unto thousands, and recompensest the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them: the Great, the Mighty God, the LORD of hosts, is his name,
Everyone struggles from something that was passed down from past generations, however, we cannot use that as an excuse to sin, and we can choose to have the lifestyle that leads and points our future generations to Christ.
Things like reading the Bible to them and with them, praying with them and for them, going to church with your children and family, having family Bible study, the list goes on.
Whenever one generation makes the chose to break free and live a life pleasing to Christ, satan will try to destroy the second generation. The second generation is the strongest, and if satan destroys it, he will also destroy future generations of that same family line.
Proverbs 17:6 - Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.
A survey was done of young men who were in the juvenile justice system. When asked what they did and why, the majority responded with statements like, my dad was an alcoholic, or I had the freedom to come and go as I pleased and do what I wanted to do, and that no one spent time with them as a child growing up and no one took them to church or had family devotions with them. These are just a few curses that hurt generations, and if you don’t put a stop to it now, it will keep on hurting future generations.
Luke 11:47-48;51 - Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres. From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation.
Sins and iniquities come from the fathers; come from past generations.
Acts 7:51 - Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it. {past generations}
Proverbs 30:11-14 - There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother. There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness. There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up. There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.
Sound familiar?
Would you keep doing the sins, or curses, in your life if you could see the faces of your future generations?
Sins and curses like anger, bitterness, bat attitudes, rebellion, bad language, alcohol use, tobacco use, drug use, and again, the list goes on.
Don’t despair, there is hope!
The family curses can be broken! Keep in mind, if you go before God right now to stop the family curses, satan is going to be waiting to tempt you and try to get you to fall, but, God’s grace IS sufficient! Seek God and worship Him, not the sin.
Romans 5:20 - Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:
Want to know how to break the curse?
See it, realize it, repent of it, get rid of it! Confess the sins of your family too.
Leviticus 26:40 - If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against me, and that also they have walked contrary unto me;
Nehemiah – 1:6 - Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father's house have sinned.
God can and will cut that curse right off you and your future generations with the blood of Christ.
- get away from the sin, avoid it and being around people who are in it
- have an accountability partner, even better if it is someone you wouldn’t indulge in the sin around
and consider the following when you are tempted to partake in sin

Acts 19:19 - Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of – they took a stand and burned all the evil books
- pray about it
- put action to your feats
- commit to live by God’s Word, even, epically, if you don’t ‘feel’ like it
- if your single, don’t consider a mate who isn’t serious about committing to living by God’s Word. This is a huge way to stop the family curses.
So, what are you passing down?
